Most of the advice floating around POD spaces assumes you're selling physical products made from a design. But there's a whole parallel path — selling the SVG or PNG file itself as a digital download, for buyers who want to print or cut it themselves — and it works on genuinely different rules.
The upside is obvious once you say it out loud: no printing, no shipping, no inventory, no per-order production cost at all. A digital download sale is close to pure profit after Etsy's fees, since there's no physical good behind it. This is a big part of why digital SVG bundles for Cricut and Silhouette users have become such a popular category — the margins are simply better structurally than physical POD.
The audience is different too, and that matters for how you market. Buyers of raw SVG files are usually crafters themselves — people running their own Cricut or Silhouette machines, making their own shirts, tumblers, or decorations at home, often for personal projects or their own small side businesses. They care about different things than a shopper buying a finished shirt: file cleanliness (no stray anchor points or messy paths), layer organization if they need to separate colors, and clear licensing for what they're allowed to do with it once purchased.
Licensing gets more complicated here, not less, because you're now handing over the actual editable source file rather than a finished, non-editable product. If you sell an SVG for personal use only, buyers can cut and use it themselves but not resell anything made from it commercially. If you offer a commercial license, you need to be explicit about what that covers — can they sell products they make with it? Is there a unit cap? Can they resell the file itself bundled with other assets? Vague licensing on a digital file sale is one of the fastest ways to end up in a dispute with a confused buyer.
A practical way to think about which model fits you: if you enjoy designing more than dealing with physical product logistics, and you're comfortable being very precise about licensing terms, digital SVG sales can be a genuinely strong complementary income stream alongside — or even instead of — physical POD products built from the same original art.
