DTG (Direct-to-Garment) printing has come a long way in durability, but it's still not immune to cracking or premature fading, and when it happens, the cause is almost always one of a few specific, identifiable things โ not just "bad luck."
Improper curing during production
DTG ink needs to be properly heat-cured after printing to bond correctly with the fabric fibers. If a print provider under-cures a batch (rushing production, equipment calibration drift), the ink sits more on top of the fabric than bonded into it, which shows up later as cracking or peeling much earlier than it should. This is a provider-side issue, not something a seller or customer caused โ and it's exactly the kind of thing most platforms' defect policies exist to cover.
Washing on high heat
This is the single most common customer-side cause. High heat, whether in the wash or especially in the dryer, is genuinely harsh on any printed ink, DTG included. Washing cold or warm (not hot) and either air drying or using low heat dramatically extends the life of a printed design โ this is worth including as a simple care note on your packaging or product description, since most customers genuinely don't know this affects print life.
Turning the garment inside out (or not)
Washing a printed garment right-side out means the print directly experiences friction against other clothes, the washer drum, and detergent agitation. Turning it inside out before washing is a small habit that meaningfully reduces surface wear on the design over repeated washes.
Using fabric softener or bleach-based detergent
Fabric softeners can leave a residue that interacts poorly with printed ink over time, and any bleach or bleach-adjacent detergent is a fast way to degrade both the print and the fabric itself. A simple, gentle detergent without added softener is the safest bet for anything with a printed design.
What this means for you as a seller
Including a short, friendly care note โ cold wash, inside out, no fabric softener, low or no heat dry โ either in your product description or on a packaging insert genuinely reduces the number of "why did my print crack" messages you get down the line, and it costs you nothing to add. When a complaint does come in despite proper care, that's the signal it's likely a genuine production defect worth reporting to your platform rather than a care issue on the customer's end.
